Eco Friendly Historical Space

Last week we visited the Old Telephone Exchange as a group (not a complete group as this seems impossible!) to make sure everyone is happy with the site/space to create individually or work together as a group to install a site specific project. We took the idea to our tutor who was very excited about our choice. We were encouraged to visit Swansea Archive as a group to research the buildings history to gain inspiration.

On visiting the site for the second time, you start to notice the small details of this lovely space. The Ecological design elements incorporated into the conservation of The Old Telephone Exchange is enchanting. The wooden beams in the cafe are sourced locally, The counter is made of discarded nails and glass. The tables are created using recyclable materials and designed by a local artist. The contemporary stained glass placed over the original door is also made by an art student which enhances the historical door way into the foyer. The beautiful wooden stairwell leading to the main hall is lined with local artists work.

Since finding the building I have visited everyday either alone or with Kirsty, Rhys and sometimes Jed. We are encouraged as a group to visit the building as often as we can to feel the space, to watch the light and to become as one with the space. I cannot think of a better space to spend my time in.
