Research

Last Tuesday I visited the Civic Centre on the seafront to find some information on the Old Telephone Exchange situated in Pier Street. The librarians are so helpful and found some old newspaper cuttings for me.

In 1881 the Telephone Exchange was born for the residence of Swansea with the head office situated in Wind Street. In 1903 the telephone exchange moved to the Docks Exchange, now known as the Telephone Exchange on Pier Street. The telephone exchange expanded very quickly between 1903 and 1907 and with heavy competition between the local authority and the National Telephone Company, the council decided to sell the telephone exchange to the NTC. In 1911 the exchange was passed to the Postmaster General.
